Jesus Teaches at the Feast

1After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him. 2Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand. 3His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest. 4For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world. 5For neither did his brethren believe in him. 6Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready. 7The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil. 8Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come. 9When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.

10But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. 11Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he? 12And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people. 13Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.

14Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught. 15And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned? 16Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. 17If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. 18He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

19Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me? 20The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee? 21Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel. 22Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man. 23If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day? 24Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

Is Jesus the Messiah?

25Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill? 26But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ? 27Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is. 28Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not. 29But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me. 30Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come. 31And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?

32The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him. 33Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me. 34Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come. 35Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles? 36What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?

Living Water

37In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

Division of People over Jesus

40Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet. 41Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee? 42Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was? 43So there was a division among the people because of him. 44And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.

Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders

45Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him? 46The officers answered, Never man spake like this man. 47Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived? 48Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him? 49But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed. 50Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,) 51Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth? 52They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet. 53And every man went unto his own house.

Jesus Teaches at the Feast

1 After these things, Jesus was walking in Galilee, for he wouldn’t walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him. 2 Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was at hand. 3 His brothers therefore said to him, “Depart from here, and go into Judea, that your disciples also may see your works which you do. 4 For no one does anything in secret, and himself seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, reveal yourself to the world.” 5 For even his brothers didn’t believe in him. 6 Jesus therefore said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready. 7 The world can’t hate you, but it hates me, because I testify about it, that its works are evil. 8 You go up to the feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, because my time is not yet fulfilled.” 9 Having said these things to them, he stayed in Galilee.

10 But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly, but as it were in secret. 11 The Jews therefore sought him at the feast, and said, “Where is he?” 12 There was much murmuring among the multitudes concerning him. Some said, “He is a good man.” Others said, “Not so, but he leads the multitude astray.” 13 Yet no one spoke openly of him for fear of the Jews.

14 But when it was now the midst of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught. 15 The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How does this man know letters, having never been educated?” 16 Jesus therefore answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. 17 If anyone desires to do his will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is from God, or if I am speaking from myself. 18 He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory, but he who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

19 Didn’t Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to kill me?” 20 The multitude answered, “You have a demon! Who seeks to kill you?” 21 Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel because of it. 22 Moses has given you circumcision (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a boy. 23 If a boy receives circumcision on the Sabbath, that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me, because I made a man completely healthy on the Sabbath? 24 Don’t judge according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.”

Is Jesus the Christ?

25 Therefore some of them of Jerusalem said, “Isn’t this he whom they seek to kill? 26 Behold, he speaks openly, and they say nothing to him. Can it be that the rulers indeed know that this is truly the Christ? 27 However we know where this man comes from, but when the Christ comes, no one will know where he comes from.” 28 Jesus therefore cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “You both know me, and know where I am from. I have not come of myself, but he who sent me is true, whom you don’t know. 29 I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me.” 30 They sought therefore to take him; but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. 31 But of the multitude, many believed in him. They said, “When the Christ comes, he won’t do more signs than those which this man has done, will he?”

32 The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things concerning him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest him. 33 Then Jesus said, “I will be with you a little while longer, then I go to him who sent me. 34 You will seek me, and won’t find me; and where I am, you can’t come.” 35 The Jews therefore said among themselves, “Where will this man go that we won’t find him? Will he go to the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks? 36 What is this word that he said, ‘You will seek me, and won’t find me; and where I am, you can’t come’?”

Living Water

37 Now on the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink! 38 He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, from within him will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But he said this about the Spirit, which those believing in him were to receive. For the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus wasn’t yet glorified.

Division over Jesus

40 Many of the multitude therefore, when they heard these words, said, “This is truly the prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “What, does the Christ come out of Galilee? 42 Hasn’t the Scripture said that the Christ comes of the seed of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So there arose a division in the multitude because of him. 44 Some of them would have arrested him, but no one laid hands on him.

The Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders

45 The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why didn’t you bring him?” 46 The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this man!” 47 The Pharisees therefore answered them, “You aren’t also led astray, are you? 48 Have any of the rulers believed in him, or of the Pharisees? 49 But this multitude that doesn’t know the law is accursed.” 50 Nicodemus (he who came to him by night, being one of them) said to them, 51 “Does our law judge a man, unless it first hears from him personally and knows what he does?” 52 They answered him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search, and see that no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.” 53 Everyone went to his own house,

Jesus Teaches at the Feast

1 After this, Jesus traveled throughout Galilee. He did not want to travel in Judea, because the Jews there were trying to kill Him. 2 However, the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles a was near. 3 So Jesus’ brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea, so that Your disciples there may see the works You are doing. 4 For no one who wants to be known publicly acts in secret. Since You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.” 5 For even His own brothers did not believe in Him.

6 Therefore Jesus told them, “Although your time is always at hand, My time has not yet come. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me, because I testify that its works are evil. 8 Go up to the feast on your own. I am not b going up to this feast, because My time has not yet come.”

9 Having said this, Jesus remained in Galilee. 10 But after His brothers had gone up to the feast, He also went—not publicly, but in secret.

11 So the Jews were looking for Him at the feast and asking, “Where is He?”

12 Many in the crowds were whispering about Him. Some said, “He is a good man.”

But others replied, “No, He deceives the people.”

13 Yet no one would speak publicly about Him for fear of the Jews.

14 About halfway through the feast, Jesus went up to the temple courts c and began to teach. 15 The Jews were amazed and asked, “How did this man attain such learning without having studied?”

16 “My teaching is not My own,” Jesus replied. “It comes from Him who sent Me. 17 If anyone desires to do His will, he will know whether My teaching is from God or whether I speak on My own. 18 He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory, but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is a man of truth; in Him there is no falsehood. 19 Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps it. Why are you trying to kill Me?”

20 “You have a demon,” the crowd replied. “Who is trying to kill You?”

21 Jesus answered them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed. 22 But because Moses gave you circumcision, you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath (not that it is from Moses, but from the patriarchs.) 23 If a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses will not be broken, why are you angry with Me for making the whole man well on the Sabbath? 24 Stop judging by outward appearances, and start judging justly.”

Is Jesus the Christ?

25 Then some of the people of Jerusalem began to say, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill? 26 Yet here He is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying anything to Him. Have the rulers truly recognized that this is the Christ? 27 But we know where this man is from. When the Christ comes, no one will know where He is from.”

28 Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “You know Me, and you know where I am from. I have not come of My own accord, but He who sent Me is true. You do not know Him, 29 but I know Him, because I am from Him and He sent Me.”

30 So they tried to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come. 31 Many in the crowd, however, believed in Him and said, “When the Christ comes, will He perform more signs than this man?”

32 When the Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Jesus, they and the chief priests sent officers to arrest Him. 33 So Jesus said, “I am with you only a little while longer, and then I am going to the One who sent Me. 34 You will look for Me, but you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.”

35 At this, the Jews said to one another, “Where does He intend to go that we will not find Him? Will He go where the Jews are dispersed among the Greeks, d and teach the Greeks? 36 What does He mean by saying, ‘You will look for Me, but you will not find Me,’ and, ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”

Living Water

37 On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and called out in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said: ‘Streams of living water will flow from within him.’ ” 39 He was speaking about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. For the Spirit had not yet been given, e because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

Division over Jesus

40 On hearing these words, some of the people said, “This is truly the Prophet.”

41 Others declared, “This is the Christ.”

But still others asked, “How can the Christ come from Galilee? 42 Doesn’t the Scripture say that the Christ will come from the line of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived? f

43 So there was division in the crowd because of Jesus. 44 Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him.

The Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders

45 Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring Him in?”

46 “Never has anyone spoken like this man!” the officers answered.

47 “Have you also been deceived?” replied the Pharisees. 48 “Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Him? 49 But this crowd that does not know the law, they are under a curse.”

50 Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who himself was one of them, asked, 51 “Does our law convict a man without first hearing from him to determine what he has done?”

52 “Aren’t you also from Galilee?” they replied. “Look into it, and you will see that no prophet comes out of Galilee.” g

53 Then each went to his own home.

Jesus Teaches at the Feast

1And Jesus was walking after these things in Galilee, for he did not wish to walk in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him, 2and the feast of the Jews was nigh -- that of tabernacles -- 3his brethren, therefore, said unto him, 'Remove hence, and go away to Judea, that thy disciples also may behold thy works that thou dost; 4for no one in secret doth anything, and himself seeketh to be in public; if thou dost these things -- manifest thyself to the world;' 5for not even were his brethren believing in him. 6Jesus, therefore, saith to them, 'My time is not yet present, but your time is always ready; 7the world is not able to hate you, but me it doth hate, because I testify concerning it that its works are evil. 8Ye -- go ye up to this feast; I do not yet go up to this feast, because my time hath not yet been fulfilled;' 9and saying these things to them, he remained in Galilee.

10And when his brethren went up, then also he himself went up to the feast, not manifestly, but as in secret; 11the Jews, therefore, were seeking him, in the feast, and said, 'Where is that one?' 12and there was much murmuring about him among the multitudes, some indeed said -- 'He is good;' and others said, 'No, but he leadeth astray the multitude;' 13no one, however, was speaking freely about him, through fear of the Jews.

14And it being now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up to the temple, and he was teaching, 15and the Jews were wondering, saying, 'How hath this one known letters -- not having learned?' 16Jesus answered them and said, 'My teaching is not mine, but His who sent me; 17if any one may will to do His will, he shall know concerning the teaching, whether it is of God, or -- I do speak from myself. 18'He who is speaking from himself his own glory doth seek, but he who is seeking the glory of him who sent him, this one is true, and unrighteousness is not in him;

19hath not Moses given you the law? and none of you doth the law; why me do ye seek to kill?' 20The multitude answered and said, 'Thou hast a demon, who doth seek to kill thee?' 21Jesus answered and said to them, 'One work I did, and ye all wonder, 22because of this, Moses hath given you the circumcision -- not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers -- and on a sabbath ye circumcise a man; 23if a man doth receive circumcision on a sabbath that the law of Moses may not be broken, are ye wroth with me that I made a man all whole on a sabbath? 24judge not according to appearance, but the righteous judgment judge.'

Is Jesus the Messiah?

25Certain, therefore, of the Jerusalemites said, 'Is not this he whom they are seeking to kill? 26and, lo, he doth speak freely, and they say nothing to him; did the rulers at all know truly that this is truly the Christ? 27but this one -- we have known whence he is; and the Christ, when he doth come, no one doth know whence he is.' 28Jesus cried, therefore, in the temple, teaching and saying, 'Ye have both known me, and ye have known whence I am; and I have not come of myself, but He who sent me is true, whom ye have not known; 29and I have known Him, because I am from Him, and He did send me.' 30They were seeking, therefore, to seize him, and no one laid the hand on him, because his hour had not yet come, 31and many out of the multitude did believe in him, and said -- 'The Christ -- when he may come -- will he do more signs than these that this one did?'

32The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things concerning him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers that they may take him; 33Jesus, therefore, said to them, 'Yet a little time I am with you, and I go away unto Him who sent me; 34ye will seek me, and ye shall not find; and where I am, ye are not able to come.' 35The Jews, therefore, said among themselves, 'Whither is this one about to go that we shall not find him? -- to the dispersion of the Greeks is he about to go? and to teach the Greeks; 36what is this word that he said, Ye will seek me, and ye shall not find? and, Where I am, ye are not able to come?'

Living Water

37And in the last, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, 'If any one doth thirst, let him come unto me and drink; 38he who is believing in me, according as the Writing said, Rivers out of his belly shall flow of living water;' 39and this he said of the Spirit, which those believing in him were about to receive; for not yet was the Holy Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Division of People over Jesus

40Many, therefore out of the multitude, having heard the word, said, 'This is truly the Prophet;' 41others said, 'This is the Christ;' and others said, 'Why, out of Galilee doth the Christ come? 42Did not the Writing say, that out of the seed of David, and from Bethlehem -- the village where David was -- the Christ doth come?' 43A division, therefore, arose among the multitude because of him. 44And certain of them were willing to seize him, but no one laid hands on him;

Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders

45the officers came, therefore, unto the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, 'Wherefore did ye not bring him?' 46The officers answered, 'Never so spake man -- as this man.' 47The Pharisees, therefore, answered them, 'Have ye also been led astray? 48did any one out of the rulers believe in him? or out of the Pharisees? 49but this multitude, that is not knowing the law, is accursed.' 50Nicodemus saith unto them -- he who came by night unto him -- being one of them, 51'Doth our law judge the man, if it may not hear from him first, and know what he doth?' 52They answered and said to him, 'Art thou also out of Galilee? search and see, that a prophet out of Galilee hath not risen;' 53and each one went on to his house, but Jesus went on to the mount of the Olives.

Jesus at the Feast of Tabernacles

¹ After this, Jesus traveled around Galilee. He avoided going to Judea because the Jewish leaders were plotting to kill Him. ² But the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near—a time when the people would gather in Jerusalem to celebrate God’s provision in the wilderness.*

³ Jesus’ brothers said to Him, “You should leave here and go to Judea, so Your disciples there can see the miracles You’re doing. No one who wants to become famous keeps their work a secret! If You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.” For even His brothers didn’t believe in Him.*

Jesus replied, “Now is not the right time for Me, but for you, any time is right. The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify that its works are evil. You go ahead to the festival. I’m not going yet, because My time has not fully come.” After saying this, He stayed behind in Galilee.

Jesus Goes to the Festival

¹⁰ But after His brothers had left for the festival, Jesus went too, not publicly, but in secret. ¹¹ Now at the festival, the Jewish leaders were watching for Him and asking, “Where is He?” ¹² Among the crowds, there was much whispering about Him. Some said, “He’s a good man,” while others argued, “No, He deceives the people.” ¹³ But no one would say anything publicly about Him for fear of the Jewish leaders.

¹⁴ Halfway through the festival, Jesus went up to the temple courts and began to teach. ¹⁵ The Jewish leaders were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning without having studied?”

¹⁶ Jesus answered, “My teaching is not My own. It comes from the One who sent Me. ¹⁷ Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether My teaching comes from God or whether I speak on My own. ¹⁸ Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain honor for themselves, but whoever seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is a person of truth; there is nothing false about Him. ¹⁹ Hasn’t Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps it. Why are you trying to kill Me?”

²⁰ “You’re demon-possessed!” the crowd shouted. “Who is trying to kill You?”

²¹ Jesus replied, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed. ²² Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though it actually didn’t come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. ²³ Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses isn’t broken, why are you angry with Me for healing a whole man on the Sabbath? ²⁴ Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”

Division Over Who Jesus Is

²⁵ At that point, some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill? ²⁶ Here He is, speaking publicly, and they aren’t saying a word to Him. Have the authorities really concluded that He is the Messiah? ²⁷ But we know where this man is from; when the Messiah comes, no one will know where He is from.”

²⁸ Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “Yes, you know Me, and you know where I’m from. But I have not come on My own; the One who sent Me is true, and you do not know Him. ²⁹ I know Him because I am from Him, and He sent Me.”

³⁰ At this, they tried to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come. ³¹ Still, many in the crowd believed in Him. They said, “When the Messiah comes, will He perform more signs than this man?”

The Leaders Try to Arrest Jesus

³² The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about Him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest Him. ³³ Jesus said, “I am with you only for a short time, and then I am going to the One who sent Me. ³⁴ You will look for Me, but you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.”

³⁵ The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find Him? Will He go where our people live scattered among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks? ³⁶ What did He mean when He said, ‘You will look for Me, but you will not find Me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”

Rivers of Living Water

³⁷ On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to Me and drink. ³⁸ Whoever believes in Me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” ³⁹ By this, He meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. Up to that time, the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.*

Division Over Jesus

⁴⁰ On hearing His words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.” ⁴¹ Others said, “He is the Messiah.” Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee? ⁴² Doesn’t Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?” ⁴³ Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. ⁴⁴ Some wanted to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him.

The Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders

⁴⁵ Finally, the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring Him in?”

⁴⁶ “No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied.

⁴⁷ “You mean He has deceived you also?” the Pharisees retorted. ⁴⁸ “Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in Him? ⁴⁹ No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.”

⁵⁰ Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, ⁵¹ “Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”

⁵² They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”

Footnotes:

7:2: The Feast of Tabernacles, or Sukkot, was a week-long festival remembering God’s provision in the wilderness and celebrating the fall harvest.

7:5: Despite growing up with Jesus, His brothers did not initially believe in His divine mission, reflecting the difficulty of faith even among those closest to Him.

7:24: Jesus challenges surface-level judgments, urging people to discern with righteous judgment, not just based on appearances.

7:30: “His hour had not yet come” refers to God’s sovereign timing for Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion. Nothing could happen before the appointed time.

7:37: On the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles, a water-pouring ceremony symbolized the hope for rain and the outpouring of the Spirit in the last days, making Jesus’ invitation even more striking.

7:39: The Spirit had not yet been given because Jesus had not yet completed His mission, which would culminate in His glorification—His death, resurrection, and ascension.

7:52: The Jewish leaders dismissed Jesus based on His origins, failing to see how His humble background was in fact part of God’s redemptive plan.
