The Breaking Forth of the Hidden

Listen closely, beloved reader, for we are about to enter a place so secret that the Holy One Himself has used this word only once in all of Scripture. The Hebrew root sâthar appears but a single time in the Tanakh, and yet its weight is like a buried treasure that shakes the earth when uncovered. The KJV translators rendered it as "have in one's secret parts," a phrase that speaks of something concealed within the deepest chambers of the body. But what does it truly mean for something to break out, to erupt from within? This is not the gentle opening of a flower; this is the violent birthing of what has been hidden since the foundation of the world. The very sound of the word — saw-thar' — carries the whisper of a seal being broken, of a veil being torn.

The First Eruption: God's Hidden Womb

The only occurrence of sâthar in the Qal stem is found in Proverbs 18:8, yet the sages teach that the primal pattern of this action is written into creation itself. When God spoke light into being, did not something hidden break forth from the darkness? The paleo-Hebrew letter Shin (ש), the first letter of this root, is drawn as a tooth or a flame — it speaks of consuming fire, of that which devours and transforms. Joined with Tav (ת), the sign of the covenant, and Resh (ר), the head and the beginning, we see a picture: fire breaking forth from the covenant head. This is the God who erupts from His hiddenness to redeem. The verb stem tells us this is active, deliberate, and personal — not a passive happening, but a purposeful breaking out. When God acts with sâthar, He reveals what no eye has seen.

Human Hiddenness vs. Divine Revelation

Here is the great contrast: when humans hide, we conceal our shame. When God hides, He conceals His glory. The rabbis of old observed that the Garden narrative is the first place where hiding appears — Adam and Eve sew fig leaves, they hide among the trees. But this is not sâthar; this is a different word, a creeping away in fear. The verb sâthar carries the force of an eruption, a bursting forth that cannot be contained. Human hiding is the shrinking back of the guilty; divine eruption is the forward rush of the Holy. In Proverbs 18:8, the context speaks of the words of a whisperer being like dainty morsels that go down into the innermost chambers — into the sâthar of the belly. Jewish tradition holds that this is a warning: what we receive in secret will eventually break forth from us. The whisper we swallow becomes the eruption we cannot stop.

The Covenant Context: What Is Hidden in the Belly

The covenant people of Israel were called to be a kingdom of priests — a nation whose hidden life would erupt into blessing for all the earth. Yet the prophets cried out against a people whose inward parts were filled with violence and deceit. The sâthar of the belly, the secret place of the soul, was not yielding the fruit of righteousness. When Moses brought the Law from Sinai, the tablets were placed inside the Ark, hidden in the Holy of Holies. And yet the sages teach that the Law was not meant to remain hidden — it was to erupt from the sanctuary into the streets, from the priest's heart into the marketplace. The failure of Israel was not that they lacked the Law, but that the Law had not broken forth from their inward parts. The covenant requires an eruption of the hidden into the open.

Yeshua: The Eruption of the Hidden God

Now we come to the moment that shatters every veil. When Yeshua cried out from the cross, "It is finished," the temple veil was torn from top to bottom. This is the ultimate sâthar — the hidden Holy of Holies erupting outward, the secret place of God breaking forth into the world. In the Gospel of John, Yeshua declares that rivers of living water will flow from the belly of those who believe in Him (John 7:38). The Greek word here is koilia, the belly, the innermost chamber — the very place where sâthar operates. Yeshua Himself became the eruption of the Father's hidden love. What was concealed in the bosom of the Father from before the ages broke forth in the flesh of the Son. The early church understood this as the great unveiling: the mystery hidden for long ages was now made manifest in Christ.

The Gematria of Nine Hundred

The numerical value of sâthar is nine hundred — a number that carries the weight of completion and judgment. In the Hebrew mind, nine hundred is the square of thirty, and thirty is the age at which priests began their service, the age at which Yeshua began His ministry. But more profoundly, nine hundred is the gematria of the Hebrew phrase ha'emet ve'hashalom — "the truth and the peace." Jewish tradition holds that truth and peace are the two pillars that uphold the world, and they must erupt from within the hidden chambers of the heart if they are to be real. Nine hundred also equals the value of mishpat (judgment) when spelled in its full form. The eruption of sâthar is therefore not chaos — it is the breaking forth of righteous judgment and shalom from the hidden depths of God's character.

The Call to Burst Forth

And now, dear one, the question turns to you. What is hidden in your belly? What words have you swallowed that are ready to erupt? What love have you concealed that the world has not yet seen? The God who broke forth from the hiddenness of Sinai, who erupted from the tomb on the third day, now calls you to let the secret parts of your soul be opened. You are not meant to be a sealed vessel — you are meant to be a fountain. The sâthar of your inward life must break forth in praise, in truth, in the living water that Yeshua promised. Do not hide your light under a basket. Do not keep the treasure buried in the field. Let the eruption come. Let the hidden God who dwells within you break forth through your words, your hands, your tears. For the day is coming when every secret will be revealed, and the hidden things of the heart will be made manifest. Let that day begin now, in you.
