The Plain That Flowered with Promise

Beloved, have you ever stood upon a land so flat and wide that the heavens seemed to bend down to kiss the earth? There is such a place in the heritage of Israel, and its name is Sharon. This word appears but seven times in the sacred scroll—seven, the number of divine perfection and covenant rest. Yet in those seven echoes, a universe of meaning unfolds. The name Sharon comes from a root that speaks of uprightness and straightness, for the Hebrew letters of יָשַׁר (yashar) carry the image of that which is level, true, and unbroken. This is no mere geography; this is a revelation of how the Creator makes straight the crooked places of the heart.

The Root That Runs Straight

When the sages of old considered the word Sharon, they saw in its letters a path that leads directly to the throne of the Almighty. The derivation from yashar—to be straight, upright, and pleasing—is not accidental. In the paleo-Hebrew script, the first letter of this root, the yod, is shaped like a hand reaching downward from heaven. The shin, with its three branches, speaks of divine fire and presence. The resh, the head of a man, completes the image: a hand from heaven making straight the head of the one who walks in His ways.

This plain, then, is not merely a stretch of coastal land between Joppa and Mount Carmel. It is a living parable of the straight path that the Lord prepares for His people. As the prophet Isaiah cried out, “The glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together” (Isaiah 40:5), the leveling of the wilderness is the making of the Sharon within the soul.

The First Blossom of the Covenant

The first time Scripture speaks of Sharon, it is in the context of inheritance and promise. When Joshua divided the land among the tribes, the plain of Sharon fell to the portion of Dan and Manasseh (Joshua 12:18). But listen closely: this is not merely real estate. The land itself is a testimony to the faithfulness of the One who swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Every square cubit of Sharon was a sign that the Lord keeps His word.

Jewish tradition holds that the Sharon plain was known for its rich pastures and its roses—flowers so abundant that the very air was sweet with the fragrance of the King’s goodness. The rabbis of old observed that this plain was a place of both war and peace, of judgment and mercy. For it was here that the Philistines stood against Israel, and it was here that the cedars of Lebanon were brought ashore for the building of the Temple (1 Kings 5:9). Sharon is where the world’s materials meet the sanctuary of God.

The Rose That Speaks of the Beloved

Perhaps no passage is more beloved of the bride than the song that sings, “I am the rose of Sharon, the lily of the valleys” (Song of Solomon 2:1). Here the word blooms with intimacy. The Shulamite maiden calls herself by this name, but the early church understood that beneath the veil of poetry, a greater voice is speaking. The Rose of Sharon is the Messiah Himself, blossoming from the plain of humility, fragrant with the incense of His sacrifice.

The Hebrew word for rose here, chavatzelet, is a rare flower—some say it is the autumn crocus, others the narcissus. But what matters is its location: Sharon. The plain that is level and straight becomes the garden where the Beloved reveals His beauty. The apostolic tradition teaches that when Yeshua walked the earth, He was the fulfillment of every flower that bloomed in Sharon, every promise that sprouted from the soil of Israel. He is the straight path made flesh, the upright One who makes all things new.

The Pasture of the King

In the days of King David, the Sharon plain was not only a place of flowers but of flocks. The chronicler records that one of David’s officials was appointed over the herds that grazed in Sharon (1 Chronicles 27:29). This is no small detail. The shepherd-king knew that the straight and level land was the best pasture for his sheep. And the Good Shepherd, the Son of David, likewise leads His flock into the Sharon of His presence.

The prophet Isaiah saw a vision of restoration where “the land that was desolate and waste shall be glad, and the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the rose” (Isaiah 35:1). Though the word Sharon is not named in this verse, the ancient sages connected this blossoming to the plain that was known for its fertility. When Messiah comes, they taught, even the desert will become a Sharon. The straightening of the crooked places is the healing of the nations.

The Number of Grace Made Straight

The gematria of Sharon is 556. Consider this number carefully, for it does not stand alone. The same numerical value belongs to the Hebrew word chen—grace—when its letters are counted with their full spelling, and also to the phrase “He will be lifted up.” The number 5 is the number of grace in the Hebrew mind, and 56 is the sum of 7 times 8—the number of covenant perfection multiplied by the number of new beginnings.

What does this teach? That Sharon is not merely a place but a condition of the soul made straight by grace. The rabbis of old observed that the path to the sanctuary is always a path of humility, and humility is the beginning of all straightness. When you walk in the Sharon of the Spirit, you walk in the grace that lifts you up to see the King in His beauty. The number itself whispers: the plain of Sharon is the place where heaven’s grace makes straight what was bent by sin.

The Messiah Who Blooms from the Plain

Now lift your eyes, dear reader, to the One who is the true Rose of Sharon. When Yeshua came to the Jordan, He did not come from a palace but from Nazareth, a town that sat upon the hills overlooking the great plain. He walked the level ground of Galilee, healing the broken and making straight the lame. The apostolic witness declares that in Him all the promises of God are “yes” and “amen” (2 Corinthians 1:20). The plain of Sharon, with its roses and its flocks, its inheritance and its beauty, is a living prophecy of the Messiah.

See how the Song of Songs places the Beloved in the garden of Sharon. See how the prophet Amos speaks of the pastures of Sharon mourning when the Lord comes in judgment (Amos 1:2). And see how in the days of the restoration, the Lord promises that “Sharon shall be a fold of flocks” (Isaiah 65:10). This is the Messiah’s work: to take the broken, the parched, the desolate places of your heart and turn them into a pasture where the Good Shepherd leads you beside still waters.

Let Your Heart Be Made a Plain

And so I speak to you now, as one who has walked the rocky roads of doubt and the thorny paths of pride. The Lord is calling you to Sharon. He is leveling the mountains of your fear and filling the valleys of your despair. He is making straight a highway for His glory to enter your life. You do not need to travel to the coast of Israel to find this plain. The Spirit of the Living God is preparing a Sharon within you—a place of uprightness, of blooming, of rest.

Let the Rose of Sharon take root in the soil of your soul. Let the straight path of His commandments become your joy. And when the world sees you, may they say, “Behold, the desert has blossomed, the plain has flowered, and the glory of the Lord is revealed.” Go in peace, and let the fragrance of Messiah fill every corner of your days.
