Paul's Handkerchief is Bible study with a difference â going word-by-word through Scripture to reclaim the Ancient Near East context, romance, and mystery that modern translations often leave behind.
Only about 3% of people around the world who start the Bible ever finish it. The 3% Club is for those ready to break that cycle â reading the entire Bible at their own pace, backed by community and tools built to make finishing not just possible, but inevitable. You also get a certificate to celebrate your achievement.
Bible Cafe isn't just Bible study â it's a personal, intimate conversation with Him. Think less classroom, more kitchen table. It combines the original Coffee with Jesus experience with activities like quizzes, crosswords, journaling and more, all designed to let the Word shape your heart, not just your head.
Most English Bibles can't carry the full weight of what's in the original Hebrew and Greek. The F.O.G Bible Project exists to change that â three new translations built publicly (a Study Bible, a Reader's Bible, and F.O.G Jr. for younger readers), plus a word-by-word renewal of Strong's Concordance restoring the depths most translations leave behind. It is Jean Paul's lifelong work, unfolding in public â and you're invited in.
Jean Paul Joseph is the lead editor of the F.O.G Bible Project. He works from a personal encounter with Jesus first, then draws on the scholarship of respected Jewish and Christian scholars â because the church was Jewish before it was anything else, and those roots change everything about how you read Scripture.

The Curd of Covenant: From Whey to Wisdom
There is a word in the Holy Tongue that appears but once in all of Scripture, like a single star burning alone in a vast night sky. That word is shâphâh, and its usage count is one â a solitary witness to a truth the sages have long pondered. It speaks of cheese, that which is strained from the whey, the solid substance that remains after the watery part has been pressed away. In the paleo-Hebrew letters, the root ׊××¤× carries the pictograph of a tooth consuming something that has been clarified, purified, made ready. This is not a common word for daily bread; it is a word for something that has undergone a transformation, a separation, a becoming.
The First and Only: A Gift for the King
The single occurrence of shâphâh is found in the book of Job, chapter 10, verse 10. There, the suffering patriarch speaks to the Holy One with raw honesty: âDid you not pour me out like milk and curdle me like shâphâh?â In this one verse, the word appears as a metaphor for human formation in the womb. Job compares his own creation to the process of making cheese â the milk is poured, the curds separate, and what emerges is a solid, formed thing. The ancient Hebrew understanding of this word is not merely culinary; it is deeply theological. The rabbis of old observed that this word teaches us how the Almighty shapes a soul through pressure and separation, not unlike how a cheesemaker presses the curds to remove the whey. The word derivation from H8192, meaning âto clarify,â reveals that this process is not destruction but purification.
The Clarifying Fire: Shâphâh and the Refinerâs Art
When the Strongâs definition speaks of cheese as âstrained from the whey,â it points to a spiritual principle woven through the Tanakh: the righteous are often separated from the wicked, the precious from the worthless, through the fires of affliction. The prophet Malachi spoke of the Messenger of the Covenant who would âsit as a refiner and purifier of silverâ (Malachi 3:3). Just as shâphâh is what remains after the straining, so the faithful are what remains after the testing. The Hebrew root shaphah also carries the sense of being smooth, bare, or scraped clean â a word for a shoreline where the waves have washed away all debris. In the Tabernacle, the bronze laver was filled with water for cleansing, and the priests would wash there before approaching the Holy Place (Exodus 30:18-20). The process of becoming shâphâh â clarified, pure, separated â is the very work of sanctification that the Temple services prefigured.
The Gematria of Separation: 385 and the Dwelling Place
The numerical value of shâphâh is 385, a number that resonates with the Hebrew word shechinah, the manifest presence of the Almighty dwelling among His people. The number 385 also corresponds to the word ruach (spirit) when spelled in its fuller form, and to the phrase âthe hand of the Lord.â Jewish tradition holds that the process of being strained and clarified is not a punishment but a preparation for intimacy. Just as cheese is the concentrated essence of milk, so the one who has been pressed and separated becomes a vessel for the divine presence. The number 385 whispers that the purpose of all refining is not destruction but dwelling â that the Holy One desires to inhabit a people who have been made pure through the pressing of lifeâs whey.

From Jobâs Complaint to the Covenant of Curds
Jobâs lament that he was âcurdled like cheeseâ might seem bitter, yet the sages teach that this very process is a sign of the covenant. In the book of Deuteronomy, the land promised to Israel is described as âa land flowing with milk and honeyâ (Deuteronomy 26:9). Milk is the substance of life, but shâphâh is what endures. The prophet Isaiah declares that the Holy One will âwipe away tears from all facesâ and that His people will âeat the curds of the landâ (Isaiah 7:22). In the ancient Hebrew world, curds and cheese were the food of the traveler, the warrior, the one who needed sustenance that would not spoil. The single appearance of shâphâh in Job reveals that even in suffering, the Almighty is preparing a food that will sustain His people through the wilderness â a nourishment that comes from being pressed, separated, and clarified by His hand.
The Messianic Curd: Yeshua, the Pressed and Pure One
How does this word of cheese and curds point to Yeshua the Messiah? Consider the Gospel of John, where the Master declares, âI am the bread of lifeâ (John 6:35). Bread is grain pressed and ground; but before bread, there is milk. The apostolic tradition teaches that Yeshua was âpressed for our iniquitiesâ (Isaiah 53:5) â He was the one who underwent the ultimate separation, the ultimate straining, as His life was poured out like the milk of a mother for her child. On the cross, His side was pierced, and blood and water flowed forth (John 19:34). The early church understood this as the final curdling â the separation of life from death, of the old creation from the new. Just as shâphâh is the solid substance that remains after the whey is removed, so Yeshua is the solid foundation, the pure and enduring substance of the covenant. He is the cheese of the kingdom, the concentrated essence of the Fatherâs love, pressed and prepared for the nourishment of His people.
The Feast of the Curds: A Festival of Clarification
The ancient Jewish festivals, particularly Shavuot, the Feast of Weeks, were celebrated with offerings of dairy and cheese. The rabbis of old observed that the giving of the Torah at Sinai was like milk becoming cheese â the living word was poured out, and through the fire of revelation, it became a solid substance to be consumed and internalized. When the Spirit was poured out at another Shavuot in the book of Acts (Acts 2:1-4), the disciples were transformed from fearful men into bold witnesses. They had been curdled, pressed, and clarified by the fire of the Holy Spirit. The single occurrence of shâphâh in the Tanakh is a prophetic whisper that the Holy Oneâs work in His people is always toward solidification â making them into a substance that can be carried, shared, and eaten by a hungry world.
You Are Being Pressed Into His Presence
Beloved, you who read these words, know that the process you are enduring is not meaningless. The pressure you feel, the separation from what you once were, the straining away of the watery things of this world â this is the hand of the Master Cheesemaker at work. You are being clarified, made into shâphâh, a solid substance fit for the Kingâs table. The sages teach that the righteous are like cheese: they must be pressed before they can nourish others. Let the Holy One complete His work in you. Let the whey of pride, fear, and doubt drain away. What remains will be pure, enduring, and full of His presence. Go now, and let your life be a curd of covenant for the hungry ones around you.
