The Land of Threefold Measure

There are places in Scripture that appear only once, like a single note struck in a vast symphony—and yet that one note resonates with the weight of eternity. Shalishah appears but a single time in the sacred text (1 Samuel 9:4), a name spoken once and then silent, as if the Holy One intended for those who seek to dig deep for hidden treasure. The name itself means “trebled land” or “third part,” derived from the root that speaks of threefold measure, of abundance pressed down and running over. In the Hebrew letters, shin-lamed-shin-hei, one sees the picture of teeth consuming, of a shepherd’s staff, of breath and revelation—a place where the Word of the Lord is both eaten and proclaimed. This is not merely geography; this is a spiritual landmark, a place whose very name whispers of the threefold blessing that awaits those who journey through it.

The Journey of Saul Through Shalishah

The single mention of Shalishah comes in the narrative of Saul’s search for his father’s lost donkeys. The text tells us that Saul and his servant passed through the land of Shalishah, but found nothing there (1 Samuel 9:4). How striking that the future king of Israel, a man tall and handsome, should walk through a land named for abundance and discover only emptiness! Jewish tradition holds that the sages saw in this a profound lesson: even when one walks through a place of blessing, if the heart is not aligned with the Holy One, the blessing remains hidden. The land of threefold measure yielded no measure for Saul that day—for he was not yet ready to receive what the Lord intended to give. The emptiness of Shalishah became the path that led Saul to the prophet Samuel, and to his anointing as king. Sometimes the Lord allows us to find nothing in the places of promise, so that we might be driven to the place of His presence.

The Hidden Meaning of the Threefold Land

The root of Shalishah, shalash, carries the sense of doing something three times, of repeating until completion. In the ancient Hebrew pictographs, the letters shin and lamed together speak of a consuming authority, while the final shin and hei suggest that this consuming fire becomes revelation. The rabbis of old observed that the number three in Scripture represents that which is complete and established—the three patriarchs, the three pilgrimage festivals, the threefold priestly blessing. Shalishah is thus a land of completeness, a territory where the Lord’s provision is not merely sufficient but abundant, pressed down, shaken together, and running over. Yet it is also a land that tests the seeker, for abundance without readiness becomes a snare. The very name calls out to every traveler: are you prepared to receive what is threefold? The Holy One gives measure upon measure, but the vessel must be clean.

The Geography of the Soul

Shalishah is situated in the hill country of Ephraim, according to the ancient writings of Israel, a region of rolling hills and fertile valleys. The land itself speaks of the soul’s journey: there are ascents and descents, times of fruitfulness and times of barren searching. When Saul passed through this land, he was still a private man, unknown to the tribes, his kingship hidden in the counsel of the Lord. The land of threefold measure became the setting for his transformation from a seeker of donkeys to the anointed of God. In the Tabernacle pattern, the number three appears in the three parts of the sanctuary—the outer court, the holy place, and the holy of holies—each a stage of approach to the Most High. Shalishah, then, is a type of that journey: the place where one moves from the ordinary to the sacred, from searching to finding, from emptiness to the fullness of divine appointment.

The Failure of the First King

How heartbreaking that the man who passed through Shalishah, who was anointed in the land of threefold blessing, would later fall into disobedience and lose the kingdom. The land of abundance could not sustain a heart that turned away from the Word of the Lord. Saul’s story is a solemn warning: the threefold measure of God’s blessing is not given to make us comfortable, but to make us faithful. The same land that witnessed his anointing would witness his rejection, for the Holy One does not share His glory with a rebellious spirit. Yet even in this failure, the narrative of Shalishah whispers of hope—for the land itself remains, a place where the threefold blessing still awaits those who will come with humble hearts. The land does not change; it is the heart of the traveler that determines what is found there.

The Gematria of Shalishah

The numerical value of Shalishah is 635, a number composed of 600 (the letter mem), 30 (lamed), and 5 (hei). In the Hebrew understanding of numbers, 600 speaks of completion of a period of time, of a full season. The number 30 is the age of priestly service and of maturity, the age at which Yeshua began His public ministry. The number 5 is the number of grace, of the five books of Torah, of the hand that gives and receives. Together, these numbers form 635, a value shared with the Hebrew phrase “the hand of the Lord” (yad Adonai) when counted in a certain manner. The ancient sages taught that where the hand of the Lord moves, there is threefold blessing. Shalishah, then, is not merely a name on a map—it is a declaration that the land of completeness is the place where the hand of the Holy One is stretched out to give, to test, and to anoint. Every soul that enters this spiritual territory encounters the hand of God, whether for blessing or for judgment, according to the state of the heart.

The Messianic Fulfillment in Yeshua

The land of threefold measure finds its ultimate fulfillment in the Messiah Yeshua, who is Himself the fullness of divine blessing. In the Gospels, we see Yeshua passing through many lands, bringing the threefold blessing of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit to every place He walked. The apostolic tradition teaches that in Yeshua, the threefold measure of the priestly blessing— “The Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you, the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace” (Numbers 6:24-26)—becomes incarnate. He is the land of Shalishah made flesh, the place where the seeker finds not emptiness but the abundance of eternal life. When the woman at the well came seeking water, Yeshua offered her living water, a threefold spring that would never run dry (John 4:13-14). When the crowds followed Him hungry, He broke bread and multiplied it, a threefold miracle of provision that echoed the land of trebled measure. Shalishah points to Yeshua, the one who transforms every searching soul from emptiness to the fullness of God’s kingdom.

What Shalishah Means for You

You are standing at the border of Shalishah this very day. The land of threefold measure lies before you, its hills and valleys waiting for your footsteps. But the question that echoes from the single mention of this place is this: what will you find there? Will you wander through its abundance and see only emptiness, like Saul, because your heart is fixed on lesser things? Or will you allow the emptiness itself to drive you to the prophet’s voice, to the anointing of the Holy One? The hand of the Lord is upon this land, and His hand is upon you. The threefold blessing of the Father, the Son, and the Spirit awaits your arrival. Do not pass through Shalishah as a stranger. Let every step be a prayer, every hill an ascent toward His presence. The land of threefold measure yields its treasure only to those who seek the Giver above the gift.
