The Right Hand of Covenant Faith

There is a word spoken only once in all of Holy Scripture, yet it carries the weight of every act of trust from Eden to the Throne. The Hebrew verb ʼâman appears but a single time in the Tanakh, and its meaning unfolds like a scroll from heaven. The ancient sages teach that when a word is rare, its one occurrence becomes a treasure house of light. This verb, drawn from the root that gives us the word for "right hand" — yamin — speaks of turning to the right hand road, of setting your face toward the path of faithfulness. It is the action of taking the hand that leads to covenant life. And though it appears only once, its echo fills every page of Scripture where God calls His people to trust.

The First Divine Movement

The Holy One, blessed be His Name, is the first to perform this action. In the beginning, when the waters were formless and void, when darkness was upon the face of the deep, the Spirit of God hovered like a mother eagle over her nest. The sages of old observed that before any creature could trust, God Himself established the pattern of ʼâman — He turned to the right hand road of creation, setting the heavens and earth in order with His right hand. The psalmist sings, "Your right hand, O Lord, is glorious in power" (Exodus 15:6). This is no mere metaphor. The right hand is the hand of covenant, the hand of oath-making, the hand that establishes what is firm and reliable. When God ʼâman, He does not merely move — He commits.

The Stem of Surrender

This single occurrence of ʼâman appears in the Qal stem, the simple active form of the verb. In Hebrew grammar, the Qal carries the sense of a completed action, a deed done by the subject without assistance or cause. The rabbis of old meditated on this: when a human being performs ʼâman, they are turning to the right hand road with their whole being. But here is the mystery — God performs this action first. He turns to the right hand road of relationship with His children. He takes the first step. The prophet Isaiah declares, "I, the Lord, have called You in righteousness, and will hold Your hand" (Isaiah 42:6). The contrast between divine and human ʼâman is not one of kind but of sequence. God turns first; then you are invited to turn after Him.

The Covenant Crossroads

In the covenant context of Israel, ʼâman becomes the hinge upon which blessing and curse turn. When Moses sets before the people the path of life and the path of death, he cries, "Choose life, that you and your descendants may live" (Deuteronomy 30:19). The right hand road is the road of life. The left hand road leads to destruction. Jewish tradition holds that the right hand represents mercy, the left hand judgment. To ʼâman is to turn toward mercy, to align yourself with the covenant promises of God. Yet how often did Israel stand at the crossroads and hesitate? The prophet Jeremiah mourns, "My people have committed two evils: they have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, and hewn themselves cisterns" (Jeremiah 2:13). They turned to the left hand road of their own making.

The Gematria of Trust

The numerical value of ʼâman is ninety-one. The ancient Hebrew letters — aleph, mem, nun — sum to this sacred number. The sages have long observed that ninety-one is also the value of two words woven together: Yah (the shortened name of God, value twenty-six) and Adonai (my Lord, value sixty-five). Together they form the divine name that speaks of mercy and sovereignty united. When you perform ʼâman, when you turn to the right hand road, you are joining heaven and earth. You are taking the hand of the One whose name is both compassion and authority. The number ninety-one whispers a secret: trust is not merely human effort — it is the convergence of divine grace and human response, the place where God's right hand meets your outstretched palm.

The Messianic Fulfillment

When Yeshua walked the dusty roads of Galilee, He embodied ʼâman in every step. The prophet Isaiah had seen this day and declared, "Behold, My Servant shall deal prudently" — the ancient sages read this as "He shall be exalted" — but the Hebrew word yaskil carries the sense of acting wisely, of turning to the right hand road (Isaiah 52:13). Yeshua took the right hand path of obedience even to the cross. At the moment of His deepest trial, He prayed, "Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit" (Luke 23:46). Here is the perfect ʼâman — the Son turning to the Father's right hand with absolute trust. And the Father answered by seating Him at His own right hand, the place of power and covenant fulfillment. The apostolic faith proclaims that He is now "at the right hand of God" (Romans 8:34), and from that throne He invites you to take the same road.

The Call to Your Right Hand Road

You stand today at the crossroads of your own life. The right hand road lies before you, ancient and worn by the feet of the faithful who have gone before. The Holy One has already turned toward you — His right hand is extended, scarred from the nails of love. The verb ʼâman waits for your action. It is not a feeling, not a whispered hope, but a deliberate turning of your whole being toward the covenant God. Take the hand that is offered. Set your face toward the path of life. Let the ninety-one whispers of heaven become the rhythm of your heart. For when you ʼâman, you do not walk alone — you walk hand in hand with the One who first turned toward you, and His grip will never fail.
