Most English Bibles can't carry the full weight of what's in the original Hebrew and Greek. The F.O.G Bible Project exists to change that ā three new translations built publicly (a Study Bible, a Reader's Bible, and F.O.G Jr. for younger readers), plus a word-by-word renewal of Strong's Concordance restoring the depths most translations leave behind. It is Jean Paul's lifelong work, unfolding in public ā and you're invited in.
Jean Paul Joseph is the lead editor of the F.O.G Bible Project. He works from a personal encounter with Jesus first, then draws on the scholarship of respected Jewish and Christian scholars ā because the church was Jewish before it was anything else, and those roots change everything about how you read Scripture.

The Foolish Secret That Became a Dwelling Place
Listen closely, beloved student, for the names of the land of Israel are not mere geographyāthey are whispers of the soulās journey. The word NįµballâṠappears but once in all the Holy Scriptures, a single utterance from the mouth of the prophet Nehemiah, yet its weight is heavy with hidden meaning. This name is composed of two roots: nÄvÄl, which speaks of foolishness, of a withered and senseless thing, and laį¹, which carries the mystery of secrecy, of a whispering in the dark. Together they form a riddle: a foolish secrecy, a hidden folly. And yet this place was counted among the dwelling places of the returning exiles, a village in the territory of Benjamin where the people of Israel rebuilt their lives after the long desolation of Babylon. How can a place named for foolish secrecy become a home for the holy? This is the question that burns in the heart of every seeker who encounters this forgotten name.
The Etymology of a Hidden Folly
The ancient sages teach that every name in Israelās inheritance bears witness to a spiritual truth, and NįµballâṠis no exception. The root nÄvÄl in its paleo-Hebrew form is drawn with the picture of a seed that has withered, a vessel that has leaked its life. It is the same word used by the psalmist when he declares, āThe fool has said in his heart, āThere is no Godāā (Tehillim 14:1). The fool is nÄvÄlānot merely unwise, but corrupt, decayed, one who has let the living water of covenant run out. And then comes laį¹, a word that appears in the sacred text to describe the secret whisper of sorcery, the hidden incantation of the serpent. In the book of Shemot, the magicians of Pharaoh worked their wonders in laį¹, in hiddenness and deception. So NįµballâṠis a place where foolishness and secrecy meetāa convergence of human weakness and the veiled workings of the enemy. Yet it is precisely this place that appears in the list of settlements rebuilt after the exile (Nehemiah 11:34). The Holy One does not shrink from naming what is broken; He redeems it by placing His people within it.
The Naming Context: A People Restored
The single appearance of NįµballâṠoccurs in the scroll of Nehemyah, during the great return from captivity. The chapter records the dwellings of the children of Judah and Benjamin, those who had come back from the ashes of Babylon to repossess the land promised to their fathers. This was not a conquest of glory; it was a rebuilding of ruins. The people settled in places like NįµballâṠnot because they were beautiful or famous, but because they were availableālandmarks of a covenant that had not been annulled despite the peopleās faithlessness. Jewish tradition holds that the returnees did not choose their cities by convenience alone; they were led by the Spirit to inhabit locations that would teach them something about their own hearts. To dwell in NįµballâṠwas to confess: āWe have been foolish in our secrecy, hiding our sins from the eyes of Heaven, yet here we are, rebuilding in the very place of our shame.ā The name itself became a sermon etched into the soil.
The Defining Moment: A Place of Hidden Encounter
Though the text does not record a dramatic theophany at NįµballĆ¢į¹, the very act of settling there was a defining moment for those who made it their home. Consider what it meant to rebuild a house on ground named for foolish secrecy. Every morning as the people stepped outside, they were reminded of their own follyāthe withered faith that had led their ancestors into exile. But here is the mystery: God does not abandon the places of our failure. He chooses to dwell among us even when we have hidden our sins in the dark. The prophet Yirmeyahu cried out, āLet not the wise man boast in his wisdom, nor the mighty man in his might⦠but let him who boasts boast in this: that he understands and knows Meā (Yirmeyahu 9:23-24). To live in NįµballâṠwas to learn that wisdom begins when folly is acknowledged, and secrecy ends when the Holy One brings all things into the light. The defining encounter with God in this place was not a burning bush or a parting seaāit was the slow, patient work of repentance in the ordinary days.

The Failure and Restoration Written in the Name
The root nÄvÄl also appears in the story of Naval, the husband of Avigayil, who was indeed a man of foolishness and harshness, whose name became a byword for senseless pride (1 Shmuel 25:25). But Avigayil, a woman of wisdom and discernment, interceded for him and saved his household from destruction. The rabbis of old observed that the name NįµballâṠcarries within it this echo of failure and rescue. The foolish secrecy of the place could have been its undoing, but restoration came through the humility of those who returned. They did not hide their past; they built upon it. In the same way, the exile of Israel was not the end of the story. The Holy One promised through the prophet Yeshayahu, āI will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning; afterward you shall be called the city of righteousness, the faithful cityā (Yeshayahu 1:26). NįµballâṠstands as a testimony that no place is too foolish, no secret too dark, for the God of Israel to redeem.
The Gematria of Ninety-One: The Hidden Name
The letters of NįµballâṠyield the number ninety-one, a value that carries profound resonance in the Hebrew tongue. Ninety-one is the sum of two sacred names: Adonai, which equals sixty-five, and Elohim, which equals twenty-six. Together they form ninety-oneāthe unity of the Lord as both Master of mercy and Judge of all the earth. The ancient sages teach that these two names together reveal the fullness of divine character: the compassion that covers folly and the righteousness that exposes secrecy. And what is the number ninety-one but also the gematria of the word Amen, when spelled in its full form? To speak amen over NįµballâṠis to declare that even the place of foolish secrecy is gathered into the faithfulness of God. The very number of the name cries out that the Lord is present where we least expect Himāin the hidden corners of our shame, in the withered fields of our failure. The numerical value is not a coincidence; it is a seal.
The Messianic Fulfillment: Yeshua, the Foolishness of the Cross
How does this obscure village point to the Messiah? The apostolic tradition teaches that the wisdom of God often appears as foolishness to the world. Shaul the emissary wrote, āThe word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of Godā (1 Corinthians 1:18). Yeshua HaMashiach was born in a stable, a place of hidden lowliness, and died on a tree, a death considered foolish and accursed by the nations. The secrecy of His conception, the hiddenness of His early years in Nazareth, the whispered accusations against Himāall of these echo the name NįµballĆ¢į¹. He entered into the full folly of human secrecy and shame, taking upon Himself the withered fruit of our sin. And just as NįµballâṠbecame a dwelling place for the restored people, so Yeshua became the dwelling place of God with us. He is the place where foolish secrecy meets divine redemption. The prophet Zecharyah spoke of a day when the Lord would āremove the iniquity of that land in one dayā (Zecharyah 3:9), and that day arrived when the Messiah hung on the cross, bearing the foolishness of the world into the light of the Fatherās love.
A Charge for Your Journey
And now, beloved, I speak directly to you. You have carried your own NįµballĆ¢į¹āa secret folly, a hidden place of shame, a withered corner of your soul where you have whispered lies to yourself in the dark. Perhaps you have believed that the Holy One cannot dwell there, that your foolishness has disqualified you from being a home for His presence. But the testimony of this single, forgotten name is that God rebuilds His people precisely in those places. He does not wait for you to become wise; He enters your hiddenness and transforms it into a dwelling. The number ninety-one stands over your life as a seal: the Lord your Master and your Judge is also your Redeemer. Let the foolishness of your secrecy be brought into the light of His mercy. Yeshua has already walked into your NįµballĆ¢į¹; He has made it His own. Now rise, rebuild, and let your life become a testimony that the God of Israel turns withered seeds into fruit-bearing trees. Go in peace, and let no secret remain hidden from His healing gaze.
