The Purchase That Cannot Be Undone

There is a word spoken only once in all the Holy Scriptures, yet it carries the weight of an entire transaction between heaven and earth. The Aramaic verb zᵉban appears but a single time, like a rare coin minted for a purpose so specific that it needs no repetition. It means to acquire by purchase, to gain something through the exchange of value. In its solitary occurrence, this word whispers a truth that echoes through every covenant God has made with His people: that what the Lord acquires, He holds forever. The sages of old teach that the act of purchase in Scripture is never merely commercial—it is always covenantal, always relational, always binding the buyer to the purchased in ways that transcend the transaction itself.

The First and Only Transaction

When you search the Tanakh for this verb zᵉban, you find it in the book of Ezra, chapter 4, verse 14. There the enemies of Israel write to King Artaxerxes, saying, “Now because we zᵉban—we have gained—our sustenance from the palace, it is not fitting for us to see the king’s dishonor.” These men speak of their position as something purchased, a loyalty bought by the king’s provision. Yet how different is this from the way the Holy One acquires His people! The root of zᵉban corresponds to the Hebrew zavin, a word associated with buying and selling in the marketplace of men. But when God purchases, He does not merely exchange silver for service. He redeems with His own presence, with His own breath. The paleo-Hebrew letters of this root—zayin, the weapon, and bet, the house—paint a picture of a house fortified by purchase, a dwelling secured through the weapon of covenant.

The Stem That Reveals the Heart

This verb appears in the Qal stem, the simple active form that speaks of direct, unmediated action. In the Qal, the subject performs the action upon the object with nothing standing between them. When God acts in the Qal, He does so with the full weight of His character—no intermediaries, no proxies, no delegation. The rabbis of old observed that when Scripture uses the simple active stem for divine action, it signals that the Lord Himself is personally invested in the outcome. Human beings may purchase with calculation, seeking advantage or profit. But when God zᵉban, He purchases because He sees something in the purchased that reflects His own glory. The covenant at Sinai was such a purchase: “You shall be My own treasured possession among all peoples” (Exodus 19:5). God did not bargain for Israel; He bought them with the price of His mighty hand.

The Covenant of Gain

The KJV translators rendered zᵉban as “gain,” a word that in English carries the scent of profit and advantage. Yet the ancient Hebrew understanding of gain was never about accumulation for its own sake. Jewish tradition holds that true gain is that which brings life, that which builds the household of faith. When Abraham purchased the cave of Machpelah for Sarah’s burial (Genesis 23), he was not acquiring real estate—he was securing a promise, a foothold in the land of covenant. Every purchase in Scripture that aligns with God’s will becomes a vessel for His purposes. The single use of zᵉban in Ezra reminds us that even the enemies of Israel understood the principle: what you are bought by, you serve. The question that hangs over every soul is this: by what have you been purchased, and whom do you serve?

The Messianic Purchase

When Yeshua walked among us, He spoke often of purchase and price. He said, “The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28). The word zᵉban finds its ultimate fulfillment not in the courts of Persian kings, but on the hill of Golgotha. There the Messiah performed the great zᵉban—not with silver or gold, but with His own blood. The apostolic tradition teaches that you were “bought with a price” (1 Corinthians 6:20), and that price was the life of the Son of God. In that single, unrepeatable transaction, the Lord gained a people for His own possession. Unlike the servants of Artaxerxes who gained their sustenance from the palace and served the king, you have been purchased by the King of kings Himself, and your sustenance is His very presence.

The Gematria of Fifty-Nine

The numerical value of zᵉban is fifty-nine. In the wisdom of the ancient Hebrew letters, this number is formed by nun (fifty) and tet (nine). Fifty is the number of the Jubilee, the year of release when every slave is set free and every debt is cancelled. Nine is the number of fruitfulness, of the fruit of the Spirit that ripens in the life of the redeemed. Together, fifty-nine whispers a secret: the purchase that Yeshua made on your behalf is a Jubilee purchase—it sets you free from every debt of sin, and it plants you in the soil of His kingdom to bear fruit that remains. The rabbis of old taught that the Jubilee was the great reset of Israel’s economy, a picture of divine restoration. Your soul’s economy has been reset by the Messiah’s zᵉban.

Your Call to Be Gained

Beloved, you have been gained. The Lord has acquired you not as a possession to be used, but as a treasure to be cherished. The single occurrence of zᵉban in all of Scripture is a mirror held up to your life: you are the purchase that God made with His own heart. Now the question returns to you: will you live as one who has been bought? Will you let the price that was paid for you shape every transaction of your day—every word you speak, every hand you extend, every step you take? The ancient sages would say that a purchased vessel belongs entirely to its owner. You belong to the Holy One. Let your life be the gain He intended when He set His love upon you.
