The Wrapping of the Soul

There is a word in the holy tongue that appears but once in all the scrolls of Israel, like a single golden thread woven into the fabric of creation. This word is gâlam, and it means to fold, to wrap together, to enclose as a garment encloses the body. The sages teach that when a word appears only one time in Scripture, it carries a weight beyond measure—a hidden treasure awaiting the one who digs deep. This single occurrence, found in the book of Job, speaks of the Most High wrapping the deep waters as a garment. The usage count is one, yet the echo of this action reverberates through every act of divine covering and human concealment.

The First Folding: God Wraps the Waters

The first and only time the Holy One performs this action is in the poetry of Job, where the sufferer cries out in his anguish: “Hast thou with him spread out the sky, which is strong, and as a molten looking glass? Who can understand the spreading of the clouds, the noise of his tabernacle? Behold, he spreadeth his light upon it, and covereth the bottom of the sea. For by them judgeth he the people; he giveth meat in abundance. With clouds he covereth the light; and commandeth it not to shine by the cloud that cometh betwixt. The noise thereof showeth concerning it, the cattle also concerning the vapour.” (Job 36:29-33). The verb appears in the Qal stem, the simple active form, indicating that this is the essential nature of the action—God does not need to be taught how to wrap; He is the Wrapper. The paleo-Hebrew letters of gâlam—gimel, lamed, mem—paint a picture: the gimel is a foot or a camel in motion, the lamed is the shepherd's staff of authority, the mem is the chaotic waters. Together they whisper of the moving authority that folds back the waters of chaos, binding them as a mother wraps her infant in swaddling clothes.

The Secret of the Stem: Qal and the Unfolding Act

Why does the Qal stem matter here? The Qal is the simple, unadorned voice of the verb—it speaks of an action performed directly by the subject. When God wraps the deep, He does not delegate this task to an angelic host nor does He require a secondary instrument. The ancient Hebrew writings reflect that the Qal stem reveals the most intimate connection between the doer and the deed. Human beings, by contrast, cannot wrap the deep. We cannot fold the ocean into a garment nor bind the sea with a command. When a man attempts to wrap or conceal, he does so in fear, in shame, or in pride—covering his nakedness with fig leaves (Genesis 3:7) or hiding his sin in the folds of his heart. But the Holy One wraps the waters not to hide them, but to hold them in their place, to give them boundaries, to reveal His glory through the very act of concealment. The rabbis of old observed that in this divine folding, the Creator teaches us that true covering is not about hiding from others, but about establishing order and purpose.

The Covenant of the Folded Garment

In the covenant context, the act of wrapping or folding takes on a profound significance. Consider the garments of the high priest, which were wrapped about his body with care—the linen breeches, the coat, the girdle, the robe of the ephod, all folded and fastened according to the pattern shown to Moses on the mountain (Exodus 28). Every fold spoke of holiness, of separation, of the covering that makes atonement. Yet the prophet Isaiah cries out, “All our righteousnesses are as filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6)—our human attempts to wrap ourselves in goodness are but stained cloths before the throne. The covenant hinges on this: will you trust in your own folding, your own covering, or will you let the One who wraps the deep itself cover you? The failure of Israel came not from a lack of folding, but from folding the wrong things—wrapping their hearts in stubbornness rather than wrapping themselves in the mercy of the Lord.

The Messianic Folding: Yeshua and the Winding Cloth

Now look to the Gospels, and see how this single verb finds its fulfillment in the Messiah. When Yeshua was born, the Holy One who wraps the deep became a child wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger (Luke 2:7). The One who folded the waters into garments was Himself folded in linen strips. And when He died, Joseph of Arimathea took His body and “wrapped it in a clean linen cloth” (Matthew 27:59). The same verb, the same action—but now the Wrapper has become the Wrapped. The early church understood this as the deepest mystery: the Creator submits to the creature’s hands, allowing Himself to be folded in death so that He might unfold the grave from within. Yet there is more—when Peter entered the empty tomb, he saw the linen cloths lying there, and the napkin that was about His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but “wrapped together in a place by itself” (John 20:7). The resurrection is the undoing of the fold, the unwrapping of death, the final declaration that the One who wrapped the deep cannot be held by any winding sheet.

The Gematria of Seventy-Three

The numerical value of gâlam is seventy-three, a number that in the wisdom of the sages speaks of the union of heaven and earth. Seventy is the number of the nations, the elders, the completion of human governance. Three is the number of divine revelation, the patriarchs, the ascent to the mountain. When you add seventy and three, you arrive at a number that shares its value with the Hebrew word chochmah—wisdom—when spelled in its full form. Jewish tradition holds that wisdom is the garment of the Creator, that “the Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old” (Proverbs 8:22). The number seventy-three whispers that the wrapping of the deep is an act of divine wisdom, a folding that makes chaos into cosmos. It also shares its value with the word for “life” in its construct form, reminding you that to be wrapped in God’s garment is to be wrapped in life itself.

The Reader’s Call: Be Wrapped in His Folds

And now, beloved, the word is spoken to you. The Holy One who folded the deep into a garment stands before you, not to wrap you in condemnation, but to fold you into His mercy. You have attempted to wrap your own soul in the garments of your own making—in good deeds, in religious observance, in the fig leaves of your pride. But He calls you to be wrapped in Him, to be folded into the linen of His righteousness, to be covered by the wings of the Shekinah. Let go of your own folding. Let the One who commands the waters to stay within their bounds command your heart to rest within His. For the day is coming when He will fold the heavens like a scroll (Revelation 6:14), and on that day, only those who have been wrapped in the Messiah will stand unashamed. Go now, and let yourself be folded into the garment of His grace—it is the only covering that will never be torn away.
