אַדֶּרֶת שֵׂעָר (aderet se'ar, "a mantle/garment of hair") was the instantly recognisable mark of the true prophet — worn by Elijah (2 Kgs 1:8) and later by John the Immerser (Matt. 3:4; cf. Mark 1:6). That false prophets would dress in it to deceive makes the garment a symbol of stolen prophetic authority. F.O.G retains the literal "hair-cloak"; F.O.G Message adds "their costume of deception" to make the cultural irony legible for a modern reader who would not automatically recognise the prophetic mantle.
