אֱלִיל (elil) — "worthless, vain, good-for-nothing" — is also the standard biblical term for idols and false gods (cf. Lev 19:4; Isa 2:8; 10:10). F.O.G renders "idol-shepherd" to surface this double meaning: the shepherd who should image God has himself become an idol — hollow, powerless, a fraud. F.O.G Message renders "worthless" to foreground moral failure in plain English. Note that this word differs from v.15's ewil (אֱוִיל, meaning moral fool), a subtle Hebrew escalation from foolishness to hollow worthlessness. The doubled verb forms yavosh tivash and kahoh tikhe (the same root repeated for emphasis in each case) are rendered with "utterly" and "completely/totally" to capture the absolute and irreversible finality of the judgment.
