Footnotes
αἱρετικόν (hairetikon) derives from hairesis—the Greek word for a faction, party, or sect (as in "the sect of the Pharisees" in Acts). It does not primarily mean "heretic" in the later doctrinal sense but describes someone who creates factions and draws people into a party spirit against the community. Both versions render it "divisive" to recover this original social-disruptive meaning, which centuries of later ecclesiastical usage have largely obscured.
