This quotation is from Epimenides of Crete (c. 6th–7th century BC), a poet-philosopher whom ancient writers regarded as a prophetic figure — Paul's use of prophētēs may be rhetorical, turning their own cultural authority against them. Gasteres argai (γαστέρες ἀργαί) literally means "idle bellies," reducing the person to their appetite — an image of pure material self-indulgence stripped of any spiritual faculty.
