Epistomizein (ἐπιστομίζειν) literally means "to put something upon the mouth" — to muzzle. The image is vivid and physical: these teachers must have their mouths forcibly shut. F.O.G renders this "silenced"; F.O.G Message makes the body-part imagery explicit: "mouths must be stopped."
