That the neighbourhood women both announce and name the child is unusual—naming was typically the role of the mother or father (cf. Genesis 29–30). This communal naming underscores that Obed's birth is not a private event but a restoration of Naomi to community and covenant. עֹובֵד (Oved/Obed) means "servant" or "worshipper"—one who serves. The name befits a child born of covenant faithfulness and chesed. Then the final three words—"father of Jesse, father of David"—detonate like a slow fuse: the entire book has been building to this, to the origin of Israel's greatest king and the ancestor of Messiah. The reader feels the ground shift.
