The mitpachat (מִטְפַּחַת) was a large outer wrap or shawl — a woman's garment wide enough to serve as a carrying cloth. The 'six measures' (שֵׁשׁ שְׂעֹרִים, shesh se'orim) of barley are unspecified in unit but likely six seahs, a generous and substantial load. In Hebrew thought six is the number of labour — the six working days of creation — and here Boaz sends Ruth home laden with provision as a material pledge that she will not return empty. A textual variant exists: the MT reads vayavo ha'ir ('he went into the city'), suggesting Boaz departed immediately to begin legal proceedings; most translations follow contextual logic and read 'she went.' FOG renders 'she went into the town' for narrative flow, though the MT variant hints compellingly at Boaz's urgency.
