Boaz's description of Ruth as an eshet chayil (אֵשֶׁת חַיִל — woman of valour, woman of strength) is electrifying: this is the exact phrase that opens the celebrated poem of Proverbs 31:10. Chayil (חַיִל) carries military, economic, and moral weight — it is used elsewhere of mighty warriors and men of capability and means. In calling Ruth an eshet chayil, Boaz publicly recognises in her formidable courage, loyalty, and practical excellence. The 'gate' (sha'ar) is not incidental — it was the seat of legal proceedings and communal judgment (cf. 4:1), making Boaz's declaration a legal-grade public endorsement. FOG renders 'woman of valour' to preserve the force of chayil; FOG Message uses 'woman of noble character' to communicate the same to modern ears.
