Did something good, then, become the cause of my death? Absolutely not! It was sin—so that sin might be seen for what it truly is—using what is good to produce death in me, so that through the commandment sin might be exposed in all its extreme and exceeding sinfulness.
Did what is good, then, become death for me? By no means! Rather, it was sin—so that sin might be exposed as sin—working death in me through what is good, in order that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful beyond all measure.
Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.
Did that which is good, then, become death to me? Certainly not! But in order that sin might be exposed as sin, it produced death in me through what was good, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.
