ἐφάπαξ (ephapax) means "once for all time" or "once and once only" — a word of absolute finality denoting an unrepeatable, complete, and sufficient act. Its cognate ἅπαξ is used in Hebrews to sharpen the contrast between Christ's single sacrifice and the repeated Levitical offerings. Both versions use the Greek's elegant relative-clause structure ("the death He died…the life He lives") to make the once-for-all contrast rhythmically and memorably audible.
