ἐφ' ᾧ (eph' hō) is one of the most contested phrases in the New Testament. Jerome's Latin Vulgate rendered it "in quo" ("in whom"), causing Augustine to read the clause as "in Adam all sinned" — a cornerstone of Western original-sin theology. Modern scholarship overwhelmingly reads ἐφ' ᾧ as a causal conjunction meaning "because." Both versions follow the causal reading. The closing dash marks a Greek anacolouthon: Sha'ul begins a comparison ("just as… so also") that he does not grammatically complete until verse 18.
