Sha'ul deploys two architecturally distinct images. πρόσκομμα is a protruding stone a pedestrian might trip over — passive, structural, possibly accidental. σκάνδαλον was originally the trigger-stick of an animal trap — the mechanism that springs the snare when triggered, thus active and designed to ensnare. Together they form a merism: whether by negligence or by active disregard, nothing may be placed in a brother's path that could bring him down. The FOG renders "stumbling block" and "snare"; the FOG Message uses "stumbling block" and "trap."
