The Greek proegnō (foreknew) carries covenantal weight far beyond mere advance knowledge. In Hebrew idiom, 'to know' (yada') someone is to be in committed relationship with them (cf. Amos 3:2: 'You only have I known of all the families of the earth'). F.O.G renders this as 'foreknew' to preserve its relational force; F.O.G Message renders it 'knew before time began' to draw out its elective-covenantal depth — God's knowing of Israel precedes creation itself.
