The repeated use of ὡς and ὅμοιοι ("like," "as") throughout vv. 7–10 is deliberate: John is straining human language to describe something beyond any existing frame of reference, stacking approximations rather than definitions. The στέφανοι worn here are victor's wreaths — the crown of the overcomer — not royal διαδήματα (diadems). These creatures grotesquely parody the conquering saints who also receive the stephanos (cf. Rev. 2:10; 3:11), inverting the imagery of victory.
