Abaddon (אֲבַדּוֹן) is a Hebrew noun meaning "destruction" or "the place of ruin," used in Job (26:6; 28:22; 31:12) and Proverbs (15:11) as a near-personification of the realm of the dead beneath Sheol. Apollyon (Ἀπολλύων) is the Greek present active participle of ἀπόλλυμι — "the one who destroys," or the Destroyer. John names this being in both languages simultaneously, addressing both his Jewish and Hellenistic audiences. The F.O.G preserves both names in their original languages to honour John's bilingual intentionality; the F.O.G Message renders Apollyon as "the Destroyer" to make its meaning immediately transparent for modern readers.
