He works from a personal encounter with Jesus first, then draws on the scholarship of respected Jewish and Christian scholars — because the church was Jewish before it was anything else, and those roots change everything about how you read Scripture.

This is a direct echo of the seventh plague against Egypt: 'fire mingled with hail, very heavy—such as had never been in all the land' (Exod. 9:24). The addition of 'blood' intensifies the allusion toward the first plague (Exod. 7:20–21). The recurring 'third' motif throughout this chapter signals graduated, partial judgment—a measured warning before the totality of the bowl-judgments—and contrasts sharply with the all' of the grass, suggesting the earth's most vulnerable layer is hit hardest.
