ἄψινθος (apsinthos) is a bitter, aromatic plant (genus Artemisia)—toxic in concentration. The name-giving echoes YHWH's precise threat through Jeremiah: 'I will feed this people with wormwood and give them poisonous water to drink' (Jer. 9:15; 23:15)—a judgment aimed at false prophets and faithless Israel, here unleashed at universal scale. More subversively, the bitter waters invert the miracle at Marah (Exod. 15:23–25), where bitter waters were made sweet by divine mercy; here judgment reverses that redemptive act.
