The Greek λαμπάς (lampas) means 'torch'—a burning brand, not a distant twinkle—making this star vivid and violent in its descent. Falling luminaries carry strong Jewish associations with fallen angelic beings (cf. Isa. 14:12, the Day Star cast down), a thread Revelation explicitly develops later (9:1; 12:9). The distinction between 'rivers' (ποταμοί) and 'springs' (πηγαί) covers all fresh water—flowing and standing—representing a total assault on the life-giving waters, inverting the ordering of creation (Gen. 1:9–10).
