The tribal list across vv. 5–8 is theologically reconfigured in several striking ways: (1) Judah — not Reuben the firstborn — heads the list, asserting the supremacy of the Messianic royal line (Gen. 49:10; Rev. 5:5); (2) Dan is entirely absent, an omission ancient tradition linked to Dan's notorious idolatry (Judg. 18; 1 Kgs. 12:29; cf. Irenaeus, Hippolytus); (3) Levi is included despite receiving no territorial allotment in the original land divisions (Num. 18:20) — the priestly tribe is here fully restored; (4) Manasseh appears separately alongside his father Joseph, displacing Ephraim (Gen. 48). This is not a census but a priestly, Messianic roll call of the whole people of God.
