144,000 = 12 × 12 × 1,000. In Hebrew symbolic arithmetic, 12 represents the completeness of God's covenant people (12 tribes, 12 apostles), and 1,000 signifies rounded, abundant totality. The number is most naturally read as a symbol for the full, sealed company of God's people rather than a precise census. Notably, John uses ἤκουσα ("I heard") here rather than εἶδον ("I saw") — a deliberate literary pattern in Revelation: what he hears is then interpreted by what he sees (cf. 5:5–6, where he hears "Lion" and turns to see "Lamb").
