psychai hypokatō tou thysiastēriou (souls beneath the altar): In the Levitical rite, sacrificial blood was poured out at the base of the altar (Lev 4:7, 4:18). The martyrs positioned "beneath the altar" are thus not merely victims but sacrificial offerings — their deaths enacted as Temple worship. The cry of their blood echoes Genesis 4:10, where Abel's blood cries out to YHWH from the ground. Psychai carries the full weight of Hebrew nephesh — not a disembodied ghost but the total conscious living being — which is precisely why these souls can cry with a loud voice, feel anguish, and receive tangible comfort.
