olynthous (unripe/late figs): The word olynthos refers specifically to late or winter figs that fail to ripen properly and cling to the tree through winter before being violently shed at the first great shaking of spring. Unlike sweet ripe figs that fall gently one by one, these drop in sudden, graceless quantities. The image conveys mass, abrupt, uncontrolled collapse — stars do not drift quietly but are thrown down in a torrent. The echo of Isaiah 34:4, which underlies much of the sixth seal's cosmic imagery, strengthens the intertextual signal that this is covenantal language about the unravelling of the present world order.
