Five accumulating adjectives deliver a devastating indictment: talaipōros (wretched/miserable), eleeinos (pitiable, deserving compassion), ptōchos (beggar-poor, utterly destitute — stronger than penēs, the labouring poor), typhlos (blind), gymnos (naked). Each strikes at Laodicea's civic pride: its renowned banking wealth, its luxury black-wool textile trade, and its celebrated Phrygian eye-salve — three claims to greatness exposed as spiritual vacancy.
