"Gog and Magog" draws directly on Ezekiel 38–39, where Gog is the prince of Magog leading a vast northern coalition against Israel in the latter days. In John's eschatological recasting, they are universalised beyond any specific geography and function as an archetypal cipher for all nations in rebellion against YHWH at history's consummation — an entire tradition compressed into two names. The phrase "four corners of the earth" (τέσσαρσι γωνίαις τῆς γῆς) reflects the ancient cosmological image of a flat earth with defined extremities, functioning as a merism for totality: no corner of creation is exempt from this final mobilisation.
