The deliberate contrast between this scene and verse 9 is one of the chapter's most devastating rhetorical moves. Both use δεῖπνον (deipnon), denoting a full, formal evening banquet — the most significant meal of the day. The "wedding banquet of the Lamb" (v.9) and the "great supper of God" (v.17) are mirror-image destinies: one table is set for the Bride who is clothed and honoured; the other assembles the birds to feast on those who refused the invitation. There are only two banquets, and every human being attends one.
