The four threats across vv. 5–6 — night terror, flying arrow, darkness-plague, and noon-destroyer — form a fourfold framework of total threat coverage, spanning every hour and every mode of danger. *Qetev* ('destruction') in v. 6 is particularly striking: in Deut. 32:24 and Hos. 13:14 it appears almost as a personified plague-force. Ancient Jewish interpretation sometimes identified the *qetev meriri* ('bitter destroyer') as a demonic noon-plague — a hostile power that strikes in full light. FOG renders 'destruction that ravages,' keeping the sense of devastating force; FOG Message allows 'the destroyer that strikes' to surface this sense of a hostile agent active at the noon hour.
