*Libboth ukhelyoth* (לִבּוֹת וּכְלָיוֹת), "hearts and kidneys," is the Hebrew idiom for the totality of the inner person. The *lev* (heart) was the seat of thought, will, and decision; the *kelayot* (kidneys) were understood as the location of the deepest hidden emotions and desires — what we might call the gut or conscience. God as *bochen* (בֹּחֵן — a forensic examiner, an assayer of metals) sees past all performance into the hidden motivations of the soul. FOG preserves the literal "kidneys" for its earthy, organ-level authenticity; FOG Message's "innermost depths" renders the semantic range accessibly while retaining the sense of hiddenness and intimacy.
