Translations
God will hear and humble them;
He who has reigned since before time began.
Selah.
For they refuse to change;
And they have no fear of God.
El will hear and bring them low;
He who is enthroned from of old.
Selah.
Because they will not change;
And they have no fear of Elohim.
God shall hear, and afflict them, even he that abideth of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God.
God will hear and humiliate them—the One enthroned for the ages—Selah because they do not change and they have no fear of God.
Footnotes
The divine name El (the ancient Semitic appellative for deity) appears here rather than YHWH or Elohim, evoking the primordial, universal sovereignty of the God who has always been. Yosev qedem (He who sits enthroned from of old/from antiquity)—qedem can mean both 'east' and 'ancient times'; here the temporal sense dominates: God's reign is not a recent arrangement but the oldest reality, predating all human treachery. The verb ya'anem (bring them low / humble them) is ambiguous—it could derive from anah I (to answer) or anah II (to afflict/humble); context favours judgment. F.O.G renders 'enthroned from of old' (temporal emphasis); F.O.G.M 'reigned since before time began' leans into the eternal, pre-existent sovereignty of God that will outlast every betrayal.
