Translations
He has redeemed my very life in peace from the war waged against me;
Even when the many stood against me.
He has ransomed my nephesh in wholeness from the battle against me;
For many were arrayed against me.
He hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me: for there were many with me.
He redeems my soul in peace from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me.
Footnotes
Nephesh (here: life/being/self) is one of the most semantically rich words in the Hebrew Bible—it can mean throat, breath, life-force, appetite, or the whole animated person. To say YHWH ransoms the nephesh is to say He rescues the entire living self, not merely an inner soul. Shalom (peace/wholeness/well-being) is equally irreducible—not merely the absence of conflict but the flourishing of every dimension of life. F.O.G retains nephesh untranslated and renders shalom as 'wholeness' to capture its breadth; F.O.G.M renders both as 'very life' and 'peace,' prioritising readability while preserving the relational weight.
