*Gever* (גֶּבֶר) echoes the *gibbôr* (גִּבּוֹר, mighty man) of verse 1, forming a deliberate bracket: the man who boasted in power is now exhibited as a cautionary object lesson. *Ma'uzzô* (מָעוּזּוֹ), 'his fortress' or 'stronghold', is the covenantal shelter he chose to refuse. Most striking is *havvātô* (הַוָּתוֹ), 'his ruin' — the identical root as *havvot* in verse 2, where his tongue was said to devise *havoc*. The weapon he wielded against others became his own undoing — a devastating, structural irony built into the very sound of the psalm. FOG preserves 'fortress' for its military-covenantal resonance; FOG Message uses 'refuge' to emphasise shelter rather than strength.
