The superscription attributes this psalm to the sons of Korach, a guild of Levitical temple singers descended from the rebel Korach (cf. Num. 26:11), whose survival and consecrated calling is itself a testimony to divine mercy. Their psalms cluster around themes of refuge, justice, and mortality (Pss. 42–49, 84–88). The Hebrew חֵלֶד (*cheled*, rendered "fleeting world" / "passing age") does not simply mean "earth" or "inhabited world" but carries the specific connotation of the brief, transient duration of human existence—the world insofar as it is time-bound and soon-ending. This sets the psalm's existential stakes from its very first breath: mortality is not incidental to the argument but the lens through which all wealth must be examined. FOG renders it "fleeting world" to preserve the temporal force of the term; FOG Message uses "passing age" to draw out the shadow it casts over everything that follows.
