The *ruach kadim* (רוּחַ קָדִים), the scorching sirocco blowing in from the desert, was a byword for devastating, inescapable power (cf. Isa. 27:8; Ezek. 27:26). "Ships of Tarshish" — likely referring to the large oceangoing vessels associated with Tarshish (possibly Tartessus in Iberia, or broadly the western Mediterranean) — became a stock image for the height of human maritime pride and power (cf. Isa. 2:16; 23:1). The psalm pivots here to the second person, addressing YHWH directly: the defeat of the kings' coalition is not chance but divine act. FOG uses the present tense ("shatter") to echo the continuing, characterful reality of YHWH's power; FOG Message opts for the past tense to ground this in the historical-typological moment.
