*Yarketei tzafon* (יַרְכְּתֵי צָפֹון) — literally "the far flanks/recesses of the north" — carries explosive polemical weight. Mount Zaphon (modern Jebel al-Aqra, on the Syrian coast) was in Canaanite/Ugaritic mythology the cosmic mountain of Baal, the divine dwelling at the uttermost north. By applying this language to Tziyon, the psalmist boldly displaces Baal's mountain with YHWH's: the true cosmic centre is not in Syria but in Yisra'el. FOG renders "far reaches of the north" to preserve the geographic-cosmological charge; FOG Message uses "crown of the north" to draw out the typological claim — Zion as the world-mountain where heaven meets earth.
