ΧͺΦ·ΦΌΧ Φ΄ΦΌΧΧ (*tannim*, 'jackals') denotes wild scavenging animals that haunt abandoned ruins, whose howling became a symbol of total desolation and divine judgment (cf. Isa. 13:22; Jer. 9:11). Some scholars read *tannin* ('sea monster'), which would add a Leviathan-chaos dimension, but parallelism with 'shadow of death' and the exile context favour jackals. Χ¦Φ·ΧΦ°ΧΦΈΧΦΆΧͺ (*tsalmaveth*, 'shadow of death') is precisely the same word Psalm 23:4 uses β 'the valley of the shadow of death.' There it is a passage walked *through* with the Shepherd beside you; here it is a covering *imposed* by Elohim Himself. The inversion of Psalm 23 is the point, and it is devastating. Both translations preserve the phrase; the theological inversion speaks for itself.
