The image of tears as *leḥem* (לֶחֶם, bread/food) is a devastating inversion of the festival table — instead of the bread of celebration and pilgrimage, the psalmist subsists on grief. The taunt *ʾayyēh ʾĕlōhêkā* ('Where is your God?') is not philosophical scepticism but social weaponry: in the ancient Near Eastern world, a god who fails to protect his worshippers is a defeated god, and his devotees are shamed by association. This taunt recurs in v.10 and Ps. 79:10, functioning like a hammer blow that falls with rhythmic cruelty. Both translations retain its raw, mocking directness.
