*Avonot* (iniquities) carries the sense of moral twistedness or accumulated guilt — deeds that distort and deform the self. The image of sin "going over the head" (*avru roshi*) evokes drowning, a flood totally engulfing the swimmer. There is also a subtle wordplay with *aviti* in v.6 ("I am bent/twisted"): the Hebrew root *avah* underlies both, suggesting that *avon* literally bends the one who commits it. FOG uses "swept over" to preserve the flood motion; FOG Message makes the flood imagery fully explicit.
