*Yistenunim* ("they act as adversaries to me") derives from the root *s-t-n*, from which *Satan* — the Adversary — takes his name. The enemies who repay good with evil take on an almost demonic quality: they embody the adversarial opposition to goodness itself. *Tachat* ("in exchange for/instead of") underlines the perversion — the psalmist's good deeds should generate goodwill and yet generate enmity instead. FOG uses "adversaries" to preserve the *s-t-n* root and its theological resonance; FOG Message uses "hostility" and "set themselves against" for clarity, letting the moral inversion speak for itself.
