Two verbs open this verse. דּוֹם (dôm, 'be still/silent/cease') calls for a deliberate quieting of inner agitation — the same word used in Ps. 131:2 of the weaned child at its mother's breast, and in Lam. 3:26 of waiting quietly for YHWH's salvation. It is not passive resignation but an active stilling. הִתְחוֹלֵל (hitḥôlēl), possibly Hithpoel of חוּל (ḥûl, 'to writhe/whirl/travail'), may convey a sustained, almost anguished waiting — not casual patience but the kind that strains toward its object. FOG renders 'wait in hope'; FOG Message uses 'wait with longing' to carry the depth of that yearning. The verb חָרָה (ḥārâ) returns here from v. 1, forming a deliberate literary bracket — the psalm keeps circling back to this burning as its central pastoral concern.
