*Heḥeliq* (root *ḥalaq*) means to make smooth, to use slippery, flattering speech — the same tongue turned inward. He smooth-talks his own conscience. The purpose clause *limtso avono lisno* ("to find his iniquity, to hate it") is negative: the grammar indicates he cannot, or refuses to, find and hate his guilt. FOG captures the self-induced moral blindness: "too blind to detect and despise." FOG Message emphasises that this is an active self-deception — he has *convinced himself* — not a passive stumbling into error.
