*Nephesh* (Χ ΦΆΧ€ΦΆΧ©Χ) in its most concrete sense is the throat β the seat of breath, appetite, and desire; by extension, the entire animated, embodied being. It is not the immortal 'soul' of Greek philosophy but the life-force as physically vulnerable and desperately hungry. Note that vv. 18β19 form one continuous sentence in Hebrew: the eye of YHWH rests upon the fearful *in order to* rescue. The watching is purposeful and protective, not merely observational. FOG retains *nephesh* to signal its rich semantic range; FOG Message uses 'souls' in the sense of whole persons under existential threat.
