*Nephesh* is one of Hebrew's most semantically rich words—throat, life-breath, appetite, the whole animated self. It resists any single English rendering. *Sheol* is the shadowy underworld of the dead beneath the earth, not a later theological abstraction but a very real geography in Israelite cosmology. *Bor* (Pit) is literally a cistern or underground chamber, here evoking the grave and mortal danger. FOG preserves both *nephesh* and *Sheol* untranslated to honour their irreducible depth; FOG Message renders "my very soul" and "realm of the dead" to make the existential stakes immediately felt.
